Description: Ramona Kane’s father has died, leaving her and her sister controlling interest in the Brooklyn Brawlers, along with his express wish that they take the helm. Total nepo babies who know zippo about running a hockey franchise, the ladies’ first instinct is to decline. Besides they need to be approved by the league’s brass, which is likely as snow in August. Will they take the plunge?
Team captain McCoy Cafferty loved Smith Kane deeply. Still, he has deep reservations about his late idol and mentor’s decision to hand the team over to his clueless daughters. McCoy may be a man-whore, but he’s serious as a heart attack about hockey and this could doom the Brooklyn Brawlers and his chance at a championship. So, rather than risk the team being run into the ground, will he team up with the ladies’ uncle to sabotage them?
What Had Me Jonesing
- I’m a New Yorker. Okay, an upstate New Yorker, which city folks don’t consider New York 😂. So, a book partially set in my once old stomping grounds of Brooklyn thrills me. Plus my upcoming romcom is partially set in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn. So, there’s that.
- Some of the steamiest sex scenes I’ve ever read, one without Ramona and McCoy ever touching. Whew baby! How’d she do that? True writing skills.
- Layered characters, both with some deep baggage, who were expertly rendered by the author.
- A great rollercoaster of a story where I knew the other shoe had to drop, and held my breath for when and how.
What Struck Me
- I grew up a football girl. Ice hockey was foreign to me. This made it a little less so. I might even check it out.
- Liked that the author touched on the lack of racial and gender diversity in hockey without it being too heavy for a romance.
- The book was almost too hot to handle🔥, but your girl stuck it out and survived with just a few burns here and there. Anything to bring, y’all, the book tea.😍
Tropes
- Enemies to Lovers
- Forbidden Love
Bottom Line
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Ramona and McCoy’s story. Actually, I couldn’t put it down and inhaled it in two days. It does sport some grammatical issues, but nothing that stopped me from keeping my nose firmly planted in this book. I look forward to other work from author Dominique Davis.
